Importance of Training Your Dog

You've adopted a new puppy. Now what? While dogs bring a lot of joy into our lives they also need training. Properly training your dog will help them and you in your daily lives. When it comes to training your dog, it can take some time and a lot of patience. Whether your dog is coming to you from the streets or a shelter, it will need to be socialized and trained properly. You don't need to send your puppy to a dog behavior school for a few months, you can train your dog yourself. The process will take some time but it will all be rewarding in the end and your bond will be even greater.

Why You Should Train Your Dog

Imagine you are walking with your dog down the block and they see a squirrel. They get so excited that they zoom out of your hands and into the streets chasing their friend. This is one of the many reasons why you should train your dog. Training your dog simple commands such as sit, stay, and no can help them tremendously while you're walking in the streets, in the dog park, or even sitting at home. A well behaved dog will:

  • sit when they are told
  • wait for your command
  • not bark at or attack people, kids, or other animals

When your dog is trained, you are more comfortable leaving them alone at home. During the pandemic, a lot of people are home more often with their pets. When it's time to go back to work, it can be overwhelming and emotional for them. You want them to be ready for the day and feel comfortable once again, being alone for eight hours on their own.

How to Train Your Pet

When it comes to training your dog, there are a few different options and steps. One way to train your dog is with positive reinforcement. This would mean giving your dog treats or praise every time they obey your command. A new study has shown that most dogs prefer good praise over treats but there is no harm in rewarding them with treats. You can praise them with a pat on their head, a massage on their ears, or even use their favorite toy and play with them.

Another thing you can use is a whistle or clicker. You want your dog to come to you when you press the clicker and reward them every time they complete their training. Whether you want to walk with your dog without running or need them to sit while you prepare their food, training is essential. It takes time and patience but in the end it's all worth it. You will have an obedient companion that will get into less trouble.
